The Delaware & Chesapeake Railroad was started in December 2003 with the groundbreaking. The garden has literally grown from a variety of plant material purchased from local retailers such as Lowes, WalMart, Home Depot, Plant Thyme, Willeys Market, and plants grown by the students at the Caroline Career & Technology Center in Ridgely, Maryland (a station stop on the original Maryland & Delaware/Chesapeake Railroad).

The Mill Creek Branch Bridge, scratch-built by students at the Caroline Career & Technology Center in Ridgely, Maryland.

The line is made up of with a variety of models, birdhouses and birdfeeders, scratch built structures and rolling stock that runs year round- even in the snow!

-Plant material located on the line includes, but is not limited to the following: fountain grass, maple trees, Japanese red maples, teddy bear bush, marigolds, petunias, English ivy, portulaca, mums, dusty miller, strawberry plants, ornamental peppers, bachelor buttons, wildflowers, herbs and many others!

-A cascading waterfall not only produces a lovely sound, but attracts wildlife. We have had mallard ducks, a crane, birds, frogs, snails and even rabbits visit!

-A tunnel constructed of cinder block runs under the water fall and sometime is a hiding place for rabbits.

-A new engine shed was scratch built by Herbie Richard from the Caroline Career & Technology Center (picture to follow).

-Much like many garden railroads, the Delaware & Chesapeake is an on-going project that is never complete!
